A Tale of Two Trails

Distance: 3 miles
Average pace: 10:00min/mile
Start time: 09/07/05, 6:00pm

Average pace: 10:50min/mile

The difference between my last two runs really couldn’t be any bigger, the more I think about it.

Tuesday I decided I’d finally give the infamous Mount Vernon Trail a whirl. I’ve seen it many a time as it snakes along the Potomac River, and thought to myself how nice it looks. The reality? Well, the view is outstanding as you run down the river, looking into DC at sights like Georgetown, the Washington Monument, and Memorial Bridge. I know that if you go further you eventually pass by the airport, Old Town Alexandria, Mount Vernon itself… a pity that at least the section I went on, it’s a pretty lousy trail. It’s incredibly narrow to the point of danger; I was running so far to the right that I was practically falling off the trail and still almost getting clipped by bicycles. The part where the trail goes under Memorial Bridge, it goes down to a single “lane” and it’s a miracle more people don’t collide and die there. In general, the people on the trail were pretty rude, both runners and cyclists; very little warning of people passing, some trail hogs, and all in all I was utterly unimpressed. I will give the people on the trail points for looking pretty darn hot, but this is ultimately a trail where the view is great but nothing else is.

On Wednesday I met up with Julie to run down the W&OD Trail… where we promptly ran into Katie about to go running as well. Julie and I adjusted our ratio so we could run with Katie, and were about to get going… and then butchinson zipped by on his bike. Why did no one tell me that it was “familiar faces” day on the trail? Sure enough, a mile and a half out, we saw Noel from our run site going in the other direction. Julie and I eventually bid goodbye to Katie once she needed to slow the pace down a bit, and switched back to our old ratio and pace for the remainder. All of this reminded me more than anything else about what I like about the W&OD Trail: all the familiar and friendly faces. It’s got mostly polite people, a lot of genuinely cool acquaintances that I run into here, and it’s just a generally well-maintained and cared for trail system. It might not be as glamorous or well known, but it’s pretty great. (And then after all of that, right as we were finishing up we ran back into butchinson, whose bicycle had lost a pedal. Julie promptly offered him a ride back to his car since she’s got the SUV, so that worked out really well.)

It’s a shame that the Mount Vernon Trail stinks; it does have the great view(s) and it’s really near my new place. But on a regular basis? No thanks. I’ll stick with the W&OD and try some others like Custis. For now, though, I’m good.

Oh yeah, last Thursday

Oops! Totally forgot to enter this. An uneasy start to September for me; I felt still and not entirely “with it” for the entire second half of this run. It wasn’t a great one for Julie, either, and it sounded like almost the exact same symptoms. She slowed down for the last mile and a half and I’m thinking I should’ve done the same thing as well instead of still trying to find my groove. It’s important to remember that sometimes we just don’t have a good run and there’s nothing you can do about it; this is something I’m better about recognizing in hindsight than when it’s occurring.

The new shoes are breaking in very well, though.

Stupid Things I’ve Said On The Trail: an ongoing series

Start time: 08/13/05, 6:00pm
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 5 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 5:1
Average pace: 10:55min/mile

Me: “Wow, it’s really hard to even maintain just under an 11min pace. What’s going on here?”
Julie: “Maybe it was the 20 miles that we ran on Saturday.”
Me: “Oh yeah, that.”

Honestly, I’d forgotten about it, the run had gone so smoothly then. Go figure, I’m blanking on 20-milers now. (Mind you, the 18-miler sucked so I guess it all evens out.)

Oops, almost forgot

Distance: 5 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 5:1
Average pace: 10:55min/mile

On Wednesday, Julie and I went running with our friend Laura, as well as Laura’s dog Tischa. Tischa was adorable, needing to wade for a couple of seconds in every stream we passed (but then Laura would just catch back up with us) and attracting the attention of… well, just about everyone! We were turning heads, but it was because of an adorable dog rather than our stunning good looks, ho ho ho.

Two days at once

Average pace: 11:20min/mile

Two hot-as-blazes running days… Monday we were all still a little tired from Saturday’s 18-miler (unsurprisingly), but were also remarkably consistent, which was nice. Even despite the rain which (naturally) hit right at the turn-around spot, yay. It wasn’t too bad aside from one really huge burst, but it only lasted about a minute and was otherwise just sprinkling.

Today was just me and Mark, and unfortunately Mark wasn’t feeling it. A combination of not much sleep and heat started wearing him down more and more as we ran, and I ended up running the last half mile by myself. It’s hot out (I’d really be pleased if it was just in the 80s for a change) and I’d already knocked out 4.5 (slower) miles, but going over the last little hill before the basketball courts just felt good.

That said, the puddle of water around Mark after we were done from him just standing in one place? Hysterically funny!

Back in the groove despite best efforts otherwise

Run:Walk ratio: 5:1
Average pace: 10:40min/mile

Back out on the trail today, despite rising humidity and having run my speed training yesterday. We were trucking along pretty good but after 3.5 miles, Julie and Mark both decided to slow down; the combination of the speed work and the weather was just beating them down. I actually felt really good, though; maybe it was the Starburst I ate a half mile earlier. Whatever the reason, I creamed that last mile and a half (9:50min/mile pace for the last mile and a half). Outside sucked, but inside I was feeling great.

I fought the lag and the lag won

Distance: 5 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 5:1
Average pace: 11:37min/mile

I flew back to DC on the red-eye Tuesday night, and grabbed a little under two hours of sleep in doing so. After I got home, I caught another two hours of sleep, then went into the office. (Yes, I’m insane.) And at the end… went running with Mark and Julie. Uggggghhhh. Heat + jet lag = disaster. I was exhausted when we were done, and our times slipped steadily throughout the run*. My only consolation (and it wasn’t much) is that my running partners were struggling, too. Oh well, tomorrow’s 16-miler should be a breeze in comparison.

Down by the Water

Start time: 07/16/05, 10:00am
Location: San Diego
Distance: 5.5 miles
Average pace: 9:02 / 13:00 / 9:55min/mile

Last Saturday I went running with three of my friends (Jill, Laurenn, and Brendan) while off in San Diego. I was to meet them at the Hyatt in the Gaslamp District down by the water, so I ran from my Little Italy hotel a mile and a quarter in 11:18. A great opening salvo in some of the best running weather I’ve probably ever had. From there it was three miles down along the water, which was fantastic. Laurenn set the pace (she’s training for a triathlon) and while the first half (12:29min/mile) was faster than the second half (13:34min/mile) it ended up with a good solid 13 average, which is what I do believe Laurenn was aiming for. From there it was slogging uphill all the way back into Little Italy by myself. When I got to El Cortez hill, I finally gasped and let myself get a 10 second walk break; that thing is steep. As in, San Francisco Steep.

A great, great run, and after two days of stiff and sore calves from walking all over the convention center, my legs felt fantastic for the rest of Saturday. And as an added bonus, I now know all about checking out “boobies” while I’m running.

Nothing terribly exciting to report aside from the weather, and that’s gotten pretty tired! I’m heading out of town for a week starting Wednesday morning but have plans to go running while in San Diego… that’s about it!

How many ways can I say “it’s hot and humid outside”?

Is it September yet? I have this fantasy, you see, that in September it will be distinctly cooler out, or at least a little less humid. (I’m deluding myself, aren’t I? *sigh*) Still, moved at a pretty nice clip despite being weighed down by a huge picnic lunch.
