Three Months and One Day Later…

Well, that’s been a while, hasn’t it? I just realized I hadn’t ever included in this journal that my shin pain was, in fact, a stress fracture. So, for the past three months I’ve been hitting the elliptical and stationary bike a lot, and finally moved back up to the real bike as well as a bit of rowing machine near the end. (I also told myself I was going to do a lot of swimming and pool running, but so far have done zilch. *sigh*)

But! It’s been three months. So today for the first time since the marathon I got to try out a short run; 10 minutes walking, 5 minutes running, 5 minutes walking, 5 minutes running. For the first time back I decided the indoor track was the way to go, and when all was said and done it was two miles (well, I added on 20 more seconds but what’s that between friends?). No pain, so that’s a very good sign. Next run is scheduled for Thursday.

It’s nice to be back.

Original plan was to take advantage of Monday’s awesome weather and run after work, then hopefully get a swim in on Tuesday. Then all sorts of stuff happened and there was no exercise at all on Monday. So I talked myself into going to the gym after work where I’d use the rowing machine and maybe run 2-3 miles. I started up with the run part and right around the same time, the program that works with developmentally challenged adults was starting their activities on the track.

And the more I was there, the more I wanted to stay there, because they were all having a blast and it was infectious. So many people on the track at TJ have scowls on their faces, or are at least stone-faced, but with this team they were working hard but also pleased with their results. (Also, I am pretty sure one of them could’ve had a career as a sprinter.) So I skipped the rowing machine and did four miles instead, but then I was starving so it was time to go home for dinner. Plus, they’d moved on to some game involving a tennis ball and the thrill was subsiding.

We had tickets Thursday nights for Madama Butterfly, so I got into work early enough that I could knock out a run afterwards. With the rain still bucketing down I decided I’d rather not drown and (alas) went for the indoor track again. I was hoping for 5 miles but I felt like crap the entire time I was running. Sometimes it just never quite clicks internally and this was one of them.

Spin Sandwich

That cold ended up knocking me for a bad loop, but this morning it appeared to be 100% gone. Didn’t have time to run in the morning and enjoy the great weather, alas, but when I got to the gym for spinning I had time for 2 miles. So I decided I’d do an indoor duathlon (or as I jokingly renamed it, a spin sandwich) and put 2 miles at either end of spinning class. All in all, worked pretty well.

Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell…

Average pace: 9:42min/mile & ~8:45min/mile

Has it really been 2 years since I’ve done this workout? Yeesh. Anyway, you open and close with a 1-mile warm-up/cool-down, but the main part of it is:

2 min (fast)
2 min (jog/recover)
1 min (faster)
1 min (jog/recover)
30 sec (fastest)
30 sec (jog/recover)

…for four cycles, totaling 28 minutes. Now, I’m guessing on the pace and distance; I lost track of how many times I went around the indoor track but I know that the fast parts were either at 8min/mile or (usually) less, and the jogging was around the 9:30-9:40 pace. So… a guess. Once it’s nice outside I’ll strap on the GPS as well and get a better read on how far/fast I went. (Or get better at counting.)
