Wetness Everywhere

Columbia Triathlon
Start time: 5/23/10, 7:00am
Location: Columbia, MD
Distance: 1.5k swim / 41k bike / 10k run
Splits: 32:16 / 1:45:44 / 1:05:12
Total time: 3:36:12
Total Miles For May: 33 miles
Total Miles For 2010: 272 miles

The Columbia Triathlon was my first olympic-distance triathlon; I ran a sprint triathlon in July 2009 to see if I liked the idea of a triathlon, and it was good enough an experience to sign up for two olympic tris in 2010. This was the first one, and I must say that I hope the second one is easier in all regards, because this was definitely a hard one. It didn’t help that there was heavy rain and thunderstorms all night before; I got maybe 3 hours of sleep, and from there it was a very early drive up to Columbia. Once there, I set up my gear as best I could (my bike was already there), met up with Moose, and then headed into the water at 7am for the start of my swim wave. The rain had fortunately stopped a few minutes earlier, and the weather in general only pushed back the start by 15 minutes.

The swim was the first open-water distance I’d done since Boy Scout Camp (and the mile swim) back in the 1980s. This meant I had to learn “sighting” (aka keeping your eyes on where you are supposed to be going) on the fly; the first turn ended up being a little wide, but after that it sorted itself out. (When I got to that turn and realized I should be making a much tighter turn, another swimmer next to me stopped, looked, and said, “I think we need to start turning a little tighter.” At least I was not alone.) On the bright side, I never did get kicked in the head, something I was expecting. On the down side, the water was disgusting and at the end you actually swam through weeds. Ugh. Still, I was happy with my finishing time for this leg; it was actually the one out of the three where I ended almost exactly where I had thought I would.

After a really slow transition (I was mentally in “all done!” mode for too much of it), I headed out onto the bike course, which is pure hill from start to finish. Biking is still my weakest part of a triathlon, and this was a struggle. It didn’t help matters that the road was still wet and slick from all of the rain. I did pass one person who had wiped out on the course, badly; adding to the experience was that just earlier on that very steep downhill stretch, I’d felt my own bike slide a tiny bit on the course, but I had regained control almost immediately. I spent the entire bike ride eating spray from other bikes as they passed me (ugh), hoping I wouldn’t wipe out, and wondering how far along the course I was. I hadn’t brought my Garmin GPS, which was a mistake; next time I’ll just switch watches and call it a day. (It can’t go in the water.) I’d convinced myself that I was barely more than halfway through (and inching through the course) when I suddenly made a turn and realized I had about three miles to go. Oh, what a wonderful moment that was. I came in on the bike about half an hour faster than I’d expected, which was a really nice surprise.

The one downside to doing better on the bike than expected was that I didn’t have as much energy left for the run as I needed. If the course was flatter I might’ve been all right, but just like the bike course, it had large and steep rolling hills, and I’ll admit that I ended up walking a few of them because I just didn’t have the power left to move any faster. It was a disappointment, and while it wasn’t a bad finish time, it was the part of the race where I came in slower than I’d wanted.

I’m looking forward to my next race (the Washington DC Triathlon on June 20th) being a much flatter course, though!

Return to the W&OD

Start time: 4/18/10, 5:30pm
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 6 miles
Average pace: 8:38min/mile
Total Miles For April: 38 miles
Total Miles For 2010: 219 miles

After working at the store today I went back over to the W&OD Trail where it leaves Vienna, aka where I had my 5-mile run that died a hideous death on Thursday. It’s funny, this one was actually 6 seconds per mile slower, but I consider it far better. Not because there was a 6th mile, but rather because I had a much more consistant pace; there wasn’t a faster first two miles followed by a bad flameout this time. Especially since I held the pace pretty well for the entire second half, which is uphill.

Temperature was much different, though; it’s very windy and cold out (54 degrees? really???) and I actually put on a second layer because that wind was chilling me to my bones. For parts I felt a little buffeted around on the trail… oof.

Cap Crescent

Start time: 4/10/10, 7:30am
Location: Cap Crescent Trail
Distance: 6 miles
Average pace: 9:32min/mile
Total Miles For April: 25 miles
Total Miles For 2010: 206 miles

For a change of scenery, on Saturday the group ran on the Cap Crescent, and it was a perfect day to do so. Nice cool temperature, gentle breeze, sunny but not blistering… good times. Towards the end Jim and I pulled ahead a bit and chatted about various things for the last two miles. All in all, a good time. (Then on Sunday I knocked out 26 miles on the bike. Unfortunately, I also forgot to put on sunscreen. Ouch. Not very smart.)

This is a pathetic February

Start time: 2/13/10, 9:30am
Location: Hains Point
Distance: 6 miles
Average pace: 10:00min/mile
Total Miles For February: 12 miles
Total Miles For 2010: 80 miles

Almost forgot to update with last Saturday’s run; with all of the snow and all (which also resulted in the rec center being closed), I haven’t had much to report! We did try and go for a run on Hains Point on Saturday, though. Turns out Park Services plowed about 85% of the road but didn’t make it (on either side) all the way to the point itself. So we got to run down one side… then back… then down the other side… then back… then a little bit more on the first side… then back. Bleah. All the cold air coming off of the snow actually ended up really hurting my lungs, too; even the next morning they were sore.

The only bright side is that everyone else in the group (Ben, Jim, Michael, Stephanie, Steve) had been forced to sit on their butt up through the previous week and a half as well, so at least we were all in the same boat. I think we all agreed it was one of the tougher 6-milers we’d ever done. Yeesh.

Boo for snow

Start time: 2/4/10, 5:45pm
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 6 miles
Average pace: 10:23min/mile
Total Miles For February: 6 miles
Total Miles For 2010: 74 miles

Phew! Taking 11 days off from running always results in some ugliness when it’s time for me to start back up. In this case, it was resting one of my feet, which had been hurting on and off since the Disney races. A combination of relacing my shoes (to not have so much pressure along the top of it) and the time off did the trick, at least; not a single ache or pain. And I was doing my best to try and stay active since last running on the 23rd; a combination of rowing machine, swimming, elliptical, and spinning classes for 9 of the 11 days off. But still, oof.

Of course, it probably didn’t help matters that my run was on the slightly-snow-clogged W&OD Trail. I was hoping more of it would have freed up by now, but there was never more than a half-mile stretch before it would inevitably be full of snow for a bit. I should have just done my run in my neighborhood instead… ah well. All that slowing down to avoid face-planting and careful footwork somehow ends up being more tiring than one would think. That and just having my running muscles out of shape meant this was inevitable. Still, with more snow en route (aaarrrrggghhh), it was one of those “now or never” sort of things.

Case of the sleepies

Start time: 10/8/09, 6:45pm
Location: North Arlington
Distance: 6 miles
Average pace: 8:53min/mile
Total Miles For October: 30 miles
Total Miles For 2009: 647 miles

The plan was to get up before work and knock out a 4-miler—but I was really super-tired this morning and it just didn’t happen. So, after work it would be, even though generally speaking my post-work runs are never as strong as my early morning runs. But it was still nice out this evening; not as cool as earlier today but still nice. So after I ran my 4-mile loop, I picked up an extra two miles as well. It sure was a beautiful night!

Wet Saturday

Start time: 5/16/09, 10:00am
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 6 miles
Average pace: 9:16min/mile
Total Miles For May: 32 miles
Total Miles For 2009: 293 miles

After taking some time off post-marathon, it was back on the trail on Saturday morning. It was a wet morning; it was raining when I left the house, and did so for about the first mile or so. Then it just got to merely a wet air sensation rather than actual rain, but meanwhile I was stuck with a wet hat for the rest of the run. Ho hum. Was definitely struggling a bit early on mentally after a few weeks off, but it felt good to do so.

Afternoon Run

Start time: 4/17/09, 4:45pm
Location: Rosslyn, Memorial Bridge, Kennedy Center, Georgetown, Key Bridge
Distance: 6.15 miles
Average pace: 9:15min/mile
Total Miles For April: 39 miles
Total Miles For 2009: 229 miles

Took most of this week off from running to see how my tendon would feel. I did do some exercise though; swam 1000m on Monday morning plus spinning class, and another 1100m in the pool on Thursday. Everything felt fine so I went for a run this afternoon; through Rosslyn, down to Memorial Bridge, past the Lincoln Memorial, up along the Potomac to the Kennedy Center, through Georgetown, then across Key Bridge back into Rosslyn and home. Good news is the run wasn’t bad (although I was dragging a bit); bad news is that my tendon is a little sore now. We’ll see how it is in a day or two… Hopefully it’ll be fine tomorrow.

Huffing and puffing

Start time: 1/11/09, 4:00pm
Location: Basement of Charlie’s condo
Distance: 3 miles & 3 miles
Average pace: 9:42min/mile & 9:58min/mile
Total Miles For January: 13 miles

Two things I really dislike about winter running are the cold, and the treadmill. It’s honestly a wonder I get any running done at all, really. I decided today’s wind was the bigger enemy, doubly so since I had a grumbly stomach yesterday so I didn’t want to be several miles out and then hit an, “I don’t feel good” moment. So, I went over to Charlie’s and ran two sets on his treadmill with a couple minutes off between them. That last bit felt like some real failure; I am bad when it comes to bouncing back from extended time off and expect to be immediately back up to speed. Nope. I had to take that second set a tiny bit slower, unfortunately, but after a mile or so I picked the pace back up so it ended up not being as bad as it could’ve been.

Sooner or later it’ll all be back up to full speed, but until then, I’m mister grumbly.

Rainy Saturday

Start Time: 10/25/08, 11:00am
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 6 miles
Average Pace: 8:48min/mile
Total Miles For October: 60 miles

Well, the plan was to go out and run 12-15 miles on Saturday; not a super-brisk run, perhaps, but just something to get back into the groove. I missed my Tues/Thurs runs this past week due to a funeral on Tuesday morning, and just not being able to wake up on Thursday. (At least Monday was an hour of rowing and elliptical, and Wednesday was spinning class, so the legs did get some work.) When I woke up early on Saturday, though, it was raining. I fell back asleep for a couple extra hours, but when I woke up… the rain was gone! Should I chance it? I decided that I should slightly change my route; instead of starting at marker 3.5 and running directly out and back, I went to marker 5 and decided I’d run down to marker 2 and back, then up to marker 9 and back. That way if it started raining again, I’d not be too far away from my car.

Well, good call. I was four miles along in my run when it started raining… and when I say raining, I mean pouring. Torrential downpour. Boy, was I glad I only had two miles to get back to the car at that point instead of four.
