A gorgeous Saturday morning

Start time: 05/14/05, 8:00am
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 5 miles & 3 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 5:1
Average pace: 11:30min/mile & 10:00min/mile

Today’s official run was a bit slow–we got caught behind another group and first tried leapfrogging, then trying to slow down a little bit to let them get ahead… finally we just had to pass them entirely. No sooner had we done that than someone needed a bathroom break, 3.5 miles in. *sigh* Ah well, my first year I know it took a little while to get hydration under control.

Afterwards, Mark and I went and knocked out three more miles. We weren’t aiming to go any faster, but as you can see clearly did. There’s a small part of me that wonders if I should’ve gone with the 10:30min/mile group, but ah well! Better safe than sorry and in agony this August.

Uuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhhhh, the sequel

Start time: 05/11/05, 6:00pm
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 5 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 5:1
Average pace: 11:08min/mile

Phew. Still hotter than I’m used to when doing this ratio. What does not kill me shall make me stronger, though. This one was definitely tougher, though. We lost about twenty seconds on each of the last two miles, and Mark looked like he’d fallen into a pool. (Ah, a fellow heavy sweater.) On the bright side, starting at 8am on Saturday will feel positively heavenly!

Uuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhhhh

Start time: 05/09/05, 6:00pm
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 5 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 5:1
Average pace: 11:00min/mile

Damn. That kicked my butt. I’m not sure if it’s a combination of not being used to a 5:1 (despite being used to that speed) and it getting a little warmer or something else, but man-oh-man was I dragging. Julie was even less thrilled by the time we were done, for that matter, although our friend Mark looked ready for another five. Oof.

Catching up

Start time: 02/20/05, 5:30pm
Location: Airtel Plaza Hotel treadmill
Distance: ~5+ miles
Average pace: ~11min/mile

The figures here are fuzzier than normal thanks to someone kicking out the power strip that my treadmill was connected to. Nice. I’m still amazed I didn’t go flying through the front of the machine when it lurched to a halt. I should’ve actually taken it as a cue to stop, in retrospect; my left calf was sore for a good day afterwards thanks to it being grumpy from several days of nothing but walking leading up to this.

Start time: 02/26/05, 9:00am
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 8 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 4:1
Average pace: 12:30min/mile

Finally got back outside and running this morning with my friend Katie. The first half was at 12min/miles and under, but after refilling our water bottles at the community center Katie asked if we could slow down a bit; she was just dragging, so we downshifted a bit and chatted and jogged the rest in.

Ice Ice Baby / Need for Speed

Start time: 02/05/05, 8:00am
Location: W&OD Trail
Distance: 10 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 4:1
Average pace: 12:01min/mile

Start time: 02/08/05, 5:50pm
Location: Local Neighborhood
Distance: 5 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 4:1
Average pace: 10:00min/mile

Two, two, two updates in one. On Saturday (after a week of sloth) I met my group for a run, but they were feeling even more slothful than I. Everyone bagged out after six miles, but I decided to hoof it a little further on my own. The group hadn’t been moving terribly fast thanks to the section of the trail we were on getting clogged with ice every half mile or so. I headed out in the other direction and it was much clearer; knocking out four 11-minute miles dropped the average pace down into something a bit more acceptable, though.

Last night I took full advantage of the fantastic weather we’re having in the DC area right now. Gorgeous running weather, and I whipped through the 5-miler even faster than I’d have imagined. In the end my finish time for the distance was 49:59. Ha! Just barely scraping the 10-minute mile point but I did, something that’s a real record for me. I think I’ve been holding myself back too much so it’s time to start playing with speed a little bit and seeing what I’m really capable of. When I finished I was breathing a little hard but I hadn’t for almost the entire distance, so that’s a good thing.

Too damn hot

Start time: 01/24/05, 7:45pm

Location: Gold’s Gym

Distance: ~5.05 miles

Average pace: ~10:54min/mile

Time: 55 minutes

Ugh. My gym was unbearably hot tonight. How hot? So hot that around 20 minutes in, I was starting to feel like it was August and I was running on a hot summer day. By 40 minutes in I was playing the “well, maybe just five more minutes” game to keep going despite the fact that I was really planning on running for a full hour. And at 55 minutes, utterly roasting, I suddenly felt dizzy and sick. Needless to say, I slammed my hand down on the “stop” button and that was that. I’d drank plenty of water before and during, so I don’t think that was the problem. I think it was just too hot. Geez, that’s something you don’t expect to say in January.

Blowing off the dust

Start time: 01/04/05, 7:00pm

Location: Local Neighborhood

Distance: 5 miles

Run:Walk ratio: 4:1

Average pace: 10:32min/mile

Geez. Been a while, hasn’t it? When I was out running tonight I suddenly decided that I should start tracking this sort of thing again, so we’ll see how that turns out.

It’s still unseasonably warm in the DC area (highs in the mid-60s today) and I took full advantage of the nice weather. Four 1.25-mile loops later and I was done. One of my calves was a little sore, the first time in over a year where it’s felt like that. Clearly it’s time I started additional calf/achilles tendon stretching again. Using Lush’s Freeze body wash afterwards, though? Heavenly. *sigh*

More importantly, I’m happy with my current speed; I’ve improved so much throughout 2004 it surprises me. I’m not as fast as someone of my friends but give me another year and who knows? Life is good, running-wise.

Running: 5 miles

Run:Walk ratio: 3:1
Average pace: 14:00min/mile

If you’d asked me all winter long, my running plans for this year were set in stone. Run the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in August, then train through that fall and winter to do the Mardi Gras Marathon at the end of February. (Not, thankfully, during Mardi Gras itself.) But with the coming of spring began longings… to run a full marathon in 2003… to be able to train for a marathon with shorts instead of sweatpants… and to tackle the Marine Corps Marathon one more time and see if the second time through I could do even better.

So in the end, after a lot of debate, my friend Julie and I signed up to do the AIDS Marathon summer program one more time. Right now we’re definitely going to still run the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in August, as well as the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October. We may still do the Mardi Gras program afterwards, or another early 2004 race to take its place (a little voice on the West Coast keeps whispering “Long Beach Marathon” to me), but we’ll see.

We missed the first two weeks of this program, so we decided to jump right in with everyone else the third week. We’d run some smaller races this spring so we knew how our speed was looking, and since we had just done a 3-miler two weeks ago anyway, we figured we were ready for a 5-miler this Saturday. What was especially nice is that we had two people that’d we’d run with before in our group; Madelyn, who we’d run with in 2001 and 2002, is in the 14:00 group, and also there is John, who we ran with in 2001. It always makes such a big difference to have a familiar face or two waiting!

We had a much larger group this year—last year’s group only had six people (and on any given weekend someone was always missing!), but this week there were no less than twelve. I suspect our numbers will dwindle with time, but for now it was an interesting experience trying to keep so many people together. We unfortunately only had eight in the group by the time we finished; two runners were having some leg problems and turned around early, and John and someone else slowed down a little bit because the cold, yucky weather was playing havoc with John’s breathing.

By the time we were done running, though, it felt really good to be back up in the swing of things. I was feeling a little hesitant all week about this, but by the time we left I knew we’d made the right decision. It should be a fun six months!

Start time: 3/22/03, 9:30am
Location: W&OD Trail
Activity: Running
Distance: 5 miles
Run:Walk ratio: 3:2
Average pace: 14:30min/mile (sorta)

I met up with the girls (Julie, Kimberly, Lisa, Martha) this morning for a 5-mile spin, which worked out pretty well for some, not so well for others. Lisa’s foot kept cramping up, and Martha might be coming down with a cold—I felt really bad for them! We ended up walking a lot of mile 4 to see if that would help, but finally they told us to go on ahead and they were going to just walk the rest in, so Kimberly and Julie and I cruised through the last mile at a nice clip. There was a guy out by a bloodbank who whenever we ran by would encourage people to donate blood. “It’s just a pint!” he’d cry out. I’m still peeved at the American Red Cross’s blood donation policies (I’m not allowed to unless I lie) but I liked him a great deal. If it wasn’t for the fact that by the time I’d have gotten home and showered they would be closed, I might have gone back over and donated. Ah well.

Brrrrr. Today was awfully cold, but after skipping last week Julie and I dragged ourselves to the East Falls Church metro station for a 5-mile jaunt. One nice surprise was to discover the AIDS Marathon winter program was there today doing their final long run (26 miles) in preparation for the Mardi Gras Marathon down in New Orleans next month. We cheered on the various pace groups as we went by them in the opposite direction, which was fun.

The run itself started off really slowly; our pace last year was a 14:30/mile, but being sloth-like for two months had whittled that down. Both Julie and I always have a sluggish first two miles, but it felt much longer this time, almost until the 2.5 mile turn-around. Heading back, though, we found ourself subconsciously picking up the pace; by mile 4 we were right on pace, and we did the final mile in a 14-minute pace. This was reassuring, since one of our goals is by spring to shave off a full minute-per-mile off our pace while still having endurance for longer runs.

The only really bad thing was that the water fountains along the W&OD trail had all frozen; fortunately, since AIDS Marathon was out and about, we could bum some water off of them when we finished. Next week if it’s this cold I’ll have to remember to bring some extra water with me to the trail!
